MY STORY

I have over two decades teaching experience and has performed widely. My career has spanned from recording with the bands Super Furry Animals and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, to composing the first ‘ukulele concerto to be performed in Britain, which premiered with Ben Rouse from the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain as the soloist and was conducted by Paul Cox. My music for guitar ensemble has also been performed widely and, in addition to lessons, I am available for commissions.

Lindsay Higgs - Homage to Brouwer (Giovanni Albini, ukulele)

“Homage to Brouwer” is a beautiful, sparkling and fast-paced brief study for ukulele solo by British composer Lindsay Higgs. I do love how the fingers 'dance' along the fretboard to get it right and I have decided to perform it on a loud and dazzling soprano ukulele that I have just restored and that was built almost forty years ago in Cagliari (Sardinia, IT) by Italian luthier Giuseppe Triolo (1942-2017). Lindsay wrote about his score: «A number of years ago I was asked to create the ukulele syllabus for a new examination board, MTB Exams, and this gave me the opportunity to compose a range of pieces in different styles. As a guitarist I have known and admired Leo Brouwer’s "Estudios Sencillos" for a long time and I was inspired to compose a study for ukulele using similar rhythms and dissonances that would hopefully pay homage to Brouwer’s pieces and capture some of their character. I am honoured that Maestro Albini has been kind enough to perform this piece for me.» ► Ukulele: Giuseppe Triolo's Custom Soprano (1985) ► Strings: Aquila Soprano Red Series (83U) ► Recorded with an iPhone XR (Video) and a Neumann KM184 stereo mic set with a Focursite Scarlett 2i2 powered by Logic Pro X running on a MacBook Pro (Audio)
